History of Fethiye

The history of Fethiye stretches back more than 3,000 years.

In ancient times the city was known as Telmessos, one of the most important settlements of the Lycian civilization. According to mythology, the city’s name originated from Telmessos, the son of the god Apollo, who fell in love with the daughter of the Phoenician king Agenor.

Throughout its long history, the city came under the rule of the Lycians, Persians, Alexander the Great, the Hellenistic kingdoms, Romans, Byzantines, the Menteşe Beylik, and eventually the Ottoman Empire.

The modern name Fethiye honors Captain Fethi Bey, one of the first Ottoman pilots, who lost his life during an early aviation mission in 1914.
