History
The area now known as Beylikdüzü has been inhabited for centuries and has witnessed the presence of numerous civilisations throughout history. During the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, it remained largely a rural settlement where agriculture and animal husbandry formed the backbone of the local economy.
Until the population exchange between Türkiye and Greece in 1923–1924, many Greek Orthodox families lived in the area. Following the exchange, Greek residents relocated to Greece, while Muslim families arriving from Greece settled in the district, bringing new traditions and contributing to the region’s cultural identity.
For many years, the settlement was known as Kavaklı, a name believed to have originated from the abundance of poplar trees (“kavak” in Turkish) that once covered the surrounding landscape.
Rapid urban development began during the late 20th century as Istanbul expanded westward. In 2008, Beylikdüzü officially became an independent district after being separated from Büyükçekmece, marking the beginning of a new era of planned urban growth.
