History
The history of Kucukcekmece dates back thousands of years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the Istanbul region.
In antiquity, the settlement was known as Rhegion, an important station on the ancient Roman road connecting Constantinople with Europe. The name is generally believed to refer either to the smaller bridge spanning the lagoon’s narrow outlet or to the traditional fishing systems once used in the waterways connecting the lake to the Sea of Marmara.
