Terme is a district in Samsun Province, situated 3-5 km from the sea in the Central Black Sea area of the Black Sea Region. Terme is an area situated in the eastern part of Samsun province. It is bordered on the west by the Çarşamba district, on the east by the Ünye district, and on the south by the Salıpazarı and Akkuş districts. To the north, there are coastal plains, while to the south are the Canik Mountains. The tallest part of the mountains reaches 450 meters. The Terme River originates in the Kara Forest and empties into the Black Sea, splitting the district in half.
The district’s ancient name is Termisus. The historical name of the current Terme River is Thermodon River. It is recognized that the historical city of Themiscyra was located along this river. It is thought that the district’s name originates from those words. The origins of Terme trace back to 1000 B.C. Previous historians have even asserted that around 1200 B.C., the legendary female warriors known as Amazons resided by the Terme River’s coast.
The name “Terme” is thought to originate from the Thermedon (present-day Terme River), where the Amazons established the ancient city of Themiscyra. The Kaskians are thought to be the oldest community that resided in the district. The Kaskians were a semi-nomadic and confrontational group that resided along the Black Sea Coast. When the Hittites reached Samsun, they ruled over the Kaskians.
The river that runs through the district splits it into two halves. The count of districts with a high population density per square kilometre is small. As a result, the area is consistently packed and bustling. It is one of the charming and lovely areas of the Black Sea Region. Due to the district’s heavy rainfall and Black Sea climate, it experiences rain showers. Consequently, the area is appropriate for farming.
Terme experiences a climate characteristic of the Black Region, which remains rainy throughout all seasons. The winter is mild and the summer is cool. The forest is its natural vegetation, reflecting its climate. Nevertheless, due to a swift population growth over the past 30 years, deforested regions have been converted into farmland. Nevertheless, the region holds significant value for poplar tree cultivation, and the poplar planting situated in the area beyond the lake is among the most unique poplar wood locations globally. In the southern rough landscape, forests have been substituted with hazelnut orchards, while the remaining forests are fragmented and consist of coppice growths.
The Terme River is the biggest river. The district also features larger rivers such as the Akçay River and the Miliç River. Particularly, the Miliç River is highly abundant in freshwater fishing and aquatic resources. Additionally, Karaboğaz Stream is situated in the western area of the district. The biggest rivers in the district are Simenit, Akgöl, and Silindir.
Terme is a lovely and serene area that has partially addressed its infrastructure issues and features its own parks. It is among the few districts that possess Sewage Treatment Plants along the Black Sea. The Terme district is made up of 67 neighborhoods.
Terme is situated along the Black Sea Coastal Road, 20 km from the Çarşamba district and 57 km away from the center of Samsun City. It is situated 32 km away from the Ünye district in Ordu Province.
