Gaziosmanpasa is one of the leading districts of Istanbul in terms of population growth rate. So much so that, according to the census in 1997, the county population increased to 570,943 people in as little as seven years, while the population density increased to 3,900 people/kil². In terms of population density, Gaziosmanpasa is one of the important settlements of not only Istanbul but also Turkey. The district area of Gaziosmanpasa was formerly within the borders of the districts of Eyup and Forkca. Today, the territory in the southeast, where the district center is located, was empty until the 1950’s. Since these lands within the borders of Eyup district were rafts and stones, they were called as Taslartar among the people.

Before 1950, there were a few workshop-type factories with the laments of those engaged in animal husbandry. The Taslartarla adventure, which started with the houses built by the state for the Balkan Migrants in 1952, 1960’it gained a terrible momentum from the years that the industry shifted to Rami and Eyup, and today the giant Gaziosmanpasa district, where 601 thousand people live, emerged. In a sense, Tasartarla is considered the core of Gaziosmanpasa district. Taslartarla, which was the city until yesterday, today has gained a modern look with its giant skyscrapers shopping centers, computerized schools and entertainment centers. It was a neighborhood of the village of Kucukkoy, which was connected to Eyup’s Rami Quarry until 1958.

According to a 1962 study, it is estimated that about 18 thousand people live in the 90 thousand slums in the Tastarla. Due to the rapid increase in the population, the Tastartarla, which is the center of the Goktepe Bucak established in Eyup County, became the center of Gaziosmanpasa County, which was created in the areas around Bucak in 1963, and after that it became known as Gaziosmanpasa. The Gaziosmanpasa County was joined by some villages of Rami Bujak and Hadymkoy Bujag, which are connected to the Forkca County.1970’before the Fork, Tayakadin Village before 1990, when the Yenikoy, a rural settlement of Forkca, was connected, Gaziosmanpasa County reached its present limits. The urban development of Gaziosmanpasa County shows the population development of the best district. As a result of the urbanization that can be seen in very few parts of the world, the population of Gaziosmanpasa grew extraordinarily in 1935-1997 in 60 years, up to 165 times.

The county’s population was 1935, at 3847, at 635,000. According to the 1935’s census, the entire population in this area was living in rural settlements. In the following years, as seen in many parts of Istanbul, urbanization accelerated in Gaziosmanpasa. The places close to Istanbul in Gaziosmanpasa County have become crowded faster and have joined the Istanbul urban area by gaining urban character. The district, which has attracted the attention of the public every period since its establishment, has gained the authority to be the second largest district of Istanbul with its increasing population in recent years. According to the 1990 General Census, the district center had a young population. So much so that the population under the age of 20 is close to half the total population. According to the same count, the literacy rate over 6 years of age in the district center was 88.1 percent.

Of those who did not read and write in the district center, 81.3 percent graduated from a learning institution. From these, 75.7 percent graduated from primary school, 12.9 percent were secondary and equivalent schools, 9.2 percent were high school and equivalent schools, and 2.2 percent’si has completed the institutions of higher education. The economically active population in the Gaziosmanpasa district center is 12 percent and constitutes 48.4 percent of the population of the older age. This suggests that about half of the population over the age of 12 is actively involved in economic life, while the other half is not economically active. The majority of the economically inactive population are housewives. Gaziosmanpasa, which is one of the cities where slumpling is intense, has been restored to a structure that increases the development trend every day in recent years especially with the infrastructure, transportation and landscaping works of the Municipality.

These services, which affect the fate of the district in a good way, have sent large investors to this region and Gaziosmanpasa has started to carry the urban elements of Istanbul. To strengthen the social structure, to keep the colorful ethnic and cultural structure alive and to respond to the needs of young people who are close to half the population; Municipality, multi-purpose sports complexes, nationalizing many areas in the newly constructed district, giant shopping and cultural centers, large tunnel and intersection works, public housing areas and recreation areas have been realized and some of them have been planned and brought to the construction stage. The rapidly increasing population and the problems caused by years of negligence in parallel gave rise to the necessity of doing many activities together and rapidly in the district.

Now it is gaining a modern look with planned infrastructure works and promising projects in the face of Gaziosmanpasa. Environmental health and human health investments, unlimited services offered to the public in social services and occupation, and an understanding of the values that make people human are brought to the forefront. It is obvious that the district, which is changing by making planned and rational surveys, will become the exemplary attraction center of Istanbul in the coming years. According to the Gaziosmanpasa Association of Artisans and Artisans, Gaziosmanpasa has 498 small-scale, 145 medium-sized and 18 large-scale enterprises. In general, 3688 people work in these enterprises, which are engaged in chandelier, auto engine repair, metal works, garments, lathe-leveling and electronic plumbing.

It can be said that a construction air is dominant in the district in general. The old slums now leave their place to planned construction. It is possible to come across retailer or wholesaler stores, excavators, carpenters selling construction materials almost everywhere in the district. In Gaziosmanpasa County, the basis of economic life is small artisan and external production activities. In the district center, 60 percent of the economically active population works in these jobs. However, there is also agricultural production in the villages connected to the district, where the rural population provides for a living. However, agricultural production is decreasing day by day. One area of activity that has started to develop in recent years is tourism. In the future, tourism activities are expected to take an important place, especially on the Black Sea coast.
