Sivriada, Islands, Istanbul

sivri adasi

Sivriada is one of the smallest islands of Istanbul. Sivriada and Yassiada are also referred to as “The Philanthropy” by the Istanbulites. They are not a profession. Sivriada is an extension of a hill rising through the sea. The height from the sea is 90 meters. To the south of the island there is a small port and a fresh water well. It is known to have been used as an island of exile during the Byzantine period. In ancient times, it is known as a place where monks who want to retreat to seclusion are also sought. There has been a monastery on the island since the 10th century.

Today only some remains are available. In Byzantine and Ottoman periods, stones were transported from this island for some structures. The Daffodils at the Haydarpasa Dock and the port of Haydarpasa were also made with stones brought from this island. In 1911, stray dogs in Istanbul were driven to this island, where they died from starvation, thirst, breaking each other down, important events in island history. The barrage dogs on the island were heard from Istanbul and the incident caused the conscientious people to feel great sadness. There have been those who attributed the subsequent occupation of Istanbul and the arrival of great work at the head of the state to the torment of the dogs here.
