Maltepe is on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. In the west, Kadikoy, in the north Umraniye and Kartal, in the east it is again adjacent to the Eagle districts. To the south is the sea of Marmara. Its surface area is 52 square kilometers. Maltepe’s history dates back to the Byzantine Empire. In those periods, it is said that its name is “Bryas” or “Urias” in the Latin name. According to other information, “Pelekanon” is in the history of the Byzantines. Although the name Bryas is mentioned by historians as having taken the old Akduman fountain in Kucukyali from the ruins of the Bryas Palace near it, there is no conclusive evidence. For this reason, Maltepe was established here in the 16th century. This region, which was captured by Suleiman Bey, an interim in the 11th century, was later lost again. The area was conquered by Orhan Gazi in 1329. In Maltepe, a small town in the Ottoman period, Kazasker Feyzullah was built by the master to an ashtray. During the Ottoman period, Maltepe was an important place as a military accommodation.
With the efforts of the 18th century Kazasker Feyzullah Efendi, Maltepe developed further and became a new city. The majority of Maltepe’s population was Greek. But the vast majority of Greeks left this place as a result of exchange during the republican period. The municipal organization in Maltepe was first organized in 1928.In 1992 it left Maltepe Kartal County and became a detached district, and on 1 November the municipality was established in Maltepe. Maltepe as a residential unit is divided into 18 neighborhoods.
